CORRIM Compares Carbon Impacts

The Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials recently released the sixth in a series of fact sheets on environmental impacts of growing, gathering, processing, using, maintaining, discarding and/or reusing wood and other bio-based materials. CORRIM’s new sheet reports results of a study comparing net carbon emissions for products used in floor and wall structures. In floor structures, dimension wood joists covered with oriented strand board comes out the winner, while concrete covered with vapor barrier is the worst combination from a carbon emissions standpoint. In wall structures, the worst assembly is concrete block and stucco. Click here for full details and here for more sheets.

Bring the Wood!

We hope you’ll forgive us for taking a moment to display a little hometown pride! As you’ve no doubt heard, the New Orleans Saints will play in the Super Bowl this Sunday for the first time in 43 years. What you may not have heard is that Saints Coach Sean Payton likes to motivate his team by telling them to “Bring the Wood.” He had the phrase engraved on wooden bats for the team, and running back Reggie Bush proudly carried his bat onto the field for the Saints playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals (click here for the story).

Naturally, all of us at SFPA will be rooting for the boys in black and gold, and we hope at least some of you will too. After all, those of us in the sawmill business just have to show a little love for any team that likes to “Bring the Wood.” And yes, we know it might take more than a bat to knock Peyton Manning and the rest of the Colts off their game!

The Latest from Real Outdoor Living

The Real Outdoor Living campaign coordinated by the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association continues to make strides in educating big-box retailers and independent dealers and their customers on the suitability of pressure-treated Southern Pine for decks and other outdoor projects. For details, see the latest edition of News and Successes from Real Outdoor Living. The newsletter also includes a report on a television segment titled “Wood is Good” produced by Dr. Anna Marie, who hosts a syndicated television show and serves as a health specialist for The Weather Channel.
