January 22, 2010 December Housing Numbers Show Improvement Ready for some encouraging news on the residential construction front? The U.S. Census Bureau reported this week that permits for privately owned housing units in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 653,000, a 10.9% increase over the revised November rate of 589,000 and 15.8% above the December 2008 estimate of 564,000. Single-family permits were at a rate of 508,000, up 8.3% from 469,000 in November and 37.3% from 370,000 in December of 2008.
Privately owned housing starts in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 557,000, down 4% from the revised November estimate of 580,000, but 0.2% above the December 2008 rate of 556,000. Single-family starts in December were at a rate of 456,000, 6.9% below the revised November figure of 490,000, but 16% above the December 2008 rate of 393,000.

Publication Showcases Southern Pine In what has become an annual tradition, Building Products Digest begins the new year by offering readers a three-page feature on Southern Pine in its January issue. Richard Wallace, SFPA’s vice president of communications, worked with BPD to coordinate this special package of stories, which includes a look at Southern Pine’s suitability for green building projects; Southern Pine flooring; and raised floor communities. SFPA International Director Resigning
Ned DeJarnette, SPFA’s director of international markets
since November 2006,
is resigning effective Feb. 26. He’s leaving SFPA to
manage the United States-Africa Energy
Association, a business association
“The decision to leave SFPA and my position as director of international markets was a difficult one,” Ned said. “I enjoy working with the staff and the members of our association. I will miss them and all the great friends I have made in the wood products industry and wish everyone the best of success in the years ahead.”

SFPA Members Invited to NAWLA Meeting The North American Wholesale Lumber Association invites SFPA’s members to attend its Regional Meeting to be held March 26 at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans. NAWLA will also hold its Annual Conference that week, marking the first time the two events have been held at the same time.
Featured Regional Meeting speakers include Wade Camp, director of economic services for the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association. Wade will present an analysis of the softwood lumber economic situation with a look at the lumber supply and demand picture going forward. A representative from the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta will provide an outlook for the national and Southeastern U.S. economies with an emphasis on the housing market.
