December 11, 2009 New AWC Coalition Sets Launch Date In August, a group of industry leaders began working to strengthen the American Wood Council by transforming it into a coalition. That effort has proven successful with organizing members voting earlier this week to launch their new AWC Coalition Jan. 1.
AWC’s governance structure includes a group of nine officers and an oversight board composed of all coalition members. Representatives of several SFPA member companies are among the newly elected officers. They are Joe Patton of the Westervelt Lumber, first vice chairman; Adrian Blocker of West Fraser, representing lumber; Fritz Mason of Georgia-Pacific LLC, overseeing structural panels; and Rob Taylor of Weyerhaeuser, leading engineered wood products. Chairman is Marc Brinkmeyer of the Idaho Forest Group.
To date, the coalition has 47 supporting members representing 58% of U.S. lumber production, 71% of structural panel production, 62% of engineered wood products and strong representation for all Canadian wood product segments. |

Southern Forestry Association Executives Convene Executives and communicators from seven Southern forestry associations recently gathered in Montgomery, Ala., to discuss issues and initiatives affecting the forest products industry. The group heard reports on the Green Globes building system from the Green Building Initiative’s Ward Hubbell; the effort to develop a commodity check-off program for softwood lumber products from Steve Lovett and Jack Jordan with the Blue Ribbon Commission; American Forest Foundation activities from AFF’s Tom Martin; an initiative to partner with architecture schools to promote wood from Chris Erwin of the Alabama Forestry Association and Christian Dagg from Auburn University; and wetlands issues from Bob Olszewski with Plum Creek Timber Company.
Representing SFPA at the event was Eric Gee, director of Expo and forest resources. Eric updated the group on the Southern Pine Council’s Raised Floor Living and Real Outdoor Living campaigns and how SFPA is working with APA and the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association to promote the use of Southern Pine lumber. “We’ve partnered with the Southern forestry associations for many years and our relationship continues to strengthen,” Eric said. “SPC’s programs offer them an opportunity to support well-established marketing initiatives.”
Attending the meeting, held Dec. 1-2, were executives and communicators from state forestry associations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas. Participants also discussed legislative issues and the challenges of leading nonprofit groups during challenging economic times. |

SFPA, APA Reps Update Code Officials on Wood Apps Attendees at the Code Officials of Lower Alabama’s recent Annual Mid-Winter Educational Conference are well-versed on the proper use of wood products in several applications thanks to the efforts of Richard Kleiner, SFPA’s director of treated markets, and Paul DiGiorgio, a regional field representative for APA. Both Richard and Paul briefed the group on the benefits of using raised floor foundations. In addition, Richard covered general specifications for using pressure-treated Southern Pine, including its use in marine construction; and Paul talked about using pressure-treated wood pony walls instead of reinforced masonry in foundation systems.
About 25 code officials, engineers and architects attended the conference held last week in Mobile, Ala. The event was cosponsored by Cox Industries Inc., an Affiliate member of SFPA. For more information, contact Richard at 504/443-4464, ext. 211, or by e-mail at rkleiner@sfpa.org. |
