2007 Annual Meeting Delivers on ‘Finding the Magic’ Promise

SFPA’s 2007 Annual Meeting proved to be both productive and entertaining for those who attended in Charleston, S.C., earlier this week. SFPA also recorded a historic event when outgoing Chairman Pat Patranella of Temple-Inland Inc. passed the gavel to Lynda Anthony of Anthony Forest Products, giving the association its first-ever female chair.

The meeting encompassed a wide range of business and social events and concluded with a meeting of SFPA’s Board of Directors. Attendees included members of SFPA and Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA), the two associations that jointly support the Southern Pine Council (SPC), as well as representatives of APA-The Engineered Wood Association, the Treated Wood Council (TWC), the North American Wholesale Lumber Association (NAWLA), the Western Wood Products Association (WWPA), the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB), Timber Products Inspection (TP) and the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC).

A variety of speakers updated attendees on some of the industry’s current issues. General session speaker Dick Carmical of Price BIOstock Services discussed why society’s dependence on fossil fuels cannot continue and outlined the environmental and economic benefits he believes the nation will achieve by using biomass or biofuel to fulfill its energy needs. Dr. Joe Lstiburek of Building Science Consulting LLC reiterated that message when he spoke to the SPC Treated Systems Committee. Both speakers compared the world’s reliance on fossil fuels to an addiction that needs to end and explained that because of its skills in agriculture and forestry, America is equipped to lead the way.  Joe also discussed “green building” and pointed out that nothing is greener than wood. He explained that 40% of the energy used goes into heating and cooling commercial and residential buildings, which means that constructing the most energy-efficient buildings possible is essential to protecting the environment. And it can’t be done with steel. “We make frying pans out of glass, aluminum and steel,” he said. “You can’t build an energy-efficient building out of glass, aluminum and steel.” Wood, on the other hand, is a poor conductor of heat, which makes it the best choice for ensuring that heat is kept out of a building in the summer and in during the winter.

Members gained insight into various systems being used to certify wood as having come from environmentally-responsible sources, thanks to a presentation by Dr. Stephen Grado of Mississippi State University during a meeting of SPC’s Special Products Committee. Steve told attendees certification “will be here for a while” and is not going away. Those attending SPC’s Building Systems Committee meeting heard about a National Frame Building Association (NFBA) initiative to increase post-frame construction sales by 25% over the next five years in a presentation by NFBA President Tom Knight and NFBA board member Tom Rogers of iLevel by Weyerhaeuser Company. Those sitting in on the International Trade and Policy Committee meeting got updates on international markets from international consultant Eddie Pearce, who represents Southern Pine in Northern Europe, and consultant Ignacio Martinez, who covers the Mediterranean markets.

Other action included reports from SPC public relations consultant Kim Drew on her efforts to keep Southern Pine front and center with trade media and their readers and updates on SPC’s Raised Floor Living campaign by Vice President of Marketing Steve Bean and Marc Ehrhardt of the Ehrhardt Group, which handles the consumer advertising and media relations portion of the campaign.

“Everyone seems to have found this a productive meeting and they also enjoyed the social aspects of the meeting, so it’s possible we may have managed to find some of the magic we envisioned when we developed our meeting theme earlier this year,” said SFPA President Digges Morgan.

SFPA Installs New Officers

The SFPA Board of Directors passed the reins to its new officers during its meeting Tuesday morning.  They are Chair Lynda Anthony of Anthony Forest Products, El Dorado, Ark.; Vice-Chairman Patrick Harrigan of Harrigan Lumber Co., Monroeville, Ala.; and Treasurer Adrian Blocker of West Fraser Inc., Germantown, Tenn. Outgoing Chairman Pat Patranella of Temple-Inland Inc., Diboll, Texas, will serve as Immediate Past Chairman. The officers assume their new roles immediately.

Lynda follows in the footsteps of her father, Clary Anthony Sr., who served as SFPA chairman in 1993. “This is an historic occasion – the first woman chair and the first father-daughter legacy of the SFPA,” she said. In addition to her father, Lynda’s uncle, Bruce W. Anthony, also previously served as SFPA chairman as did a cousin, Steven Anthony, who is a current member of SFPA’s board.

On behalf of the members and staff of SFPA it is my pleasure to welcome Lynda Anthony as the first woman to chair the Board of Directors,” said SFPA President Digges Morgan.  “Lynda’s commitment and leadership will be of great benefit to the association, and I know her father is pleased to witness her achievement.”

The board also reelected Digges as SFPA president and Tami Kessler as corporate secretary.

The Southern Pine Council, meanwhile, elected Kerlin Drake of Anthony Forest Products as its new vice-chairman, while former Vice-Chairman Mike Warren of Temple-Inland Inc. will succeed outgoing SPC Chairman Patrick Harrigan.

Good News on Horizon for Southern Pine

Though the industry is going through one of its toughest down cycles on record thanks to a depressed housing market, the future will hold brighter days, SFPA Director of Economic Services Wade Camp reported during the general session of the association’s Annual Meeting Monday. Employing the smiling and frowning faces used by doctors and nurses to determine a patient’s level of pain, Wade predicted the SP market would go from “hurts worst” in 2007 to hurting a little less in 2008 to “hurts a little bit” in 2009. The good news: the market could feel “no hurt” at all in 2010. For more information, contact Wade at 504/443-4464, ext. 217, or wcamp@sfpa.org.

Special Presentations Made

Two presentations were made during the closing session of this year’s Southern Pine Council meeting. Special Products Committee Co-Chairman Mark Junkins of McShan Lumber Company presented the Long-Sullivan Award to architect Kevin Harris, AIA, of Baton Rouge, La., and SPC public relations consultant Kim Drew presented certificates to Alan Wickstrom of Building Online and SPC Chairman Patrick Harrigan of Harrigan Lumber Company in recognition of the Vanguard Awards recently won by SPC’s Web site – www.southernpine.com. Building Online designs and maintains the award-winning site for SPC.  The Long-Sullivan Award recognizes a building or design professional who has demonstrated outstanding use of Southern Pine products.
