Long-Sullivan Award Recipient Announced

Architect Kevin Harris of Baton Rouge, La., has been selected as the recipient of the 2007 Long-Sullivan Award. Kevin has been a proponent of Southern Pine as a preferred structural and finish material for more than 25 years. The majority of his custom-designed homes feature raised floor foundations with pressure-treated sills supporting floor joists and tongue-and-groove plywood sub-flooring. Southern Pine studs, joists and rafters are also key in his projects, as are exposed heavy timber pine beams, tongue-and-groove ceilings, wainscoting and wide plank Longleaf Pine flooring. “I prefer the poetic connections of crafting a home of materials indigenous to its surroundings, such as Southern Pine,” Kevin said.

Kevin served as technical advisor during the creation of the Southern Pine Council’s Raised Floor program and contributed to SPC’s Raised Floor Systems Design and Construction Guide. His designs have won local, regional, national and international awards. He has been quoted in The New York Times, Smart Money, Business Week, Money and Old House Journal.

This is the third year the SPC will present the award, which recognizes a building or design professional who has demonstrated outstanding use of Southern Pine products. The award is named for two early 20th century marketing pioneers of the Southern Pine lumber industry – Robert A. Long and W.H. Sullivan. “The Long-Sullivan committee was very proud to select Kevin Harris from a field of very strong nominees this year,” said Mark Junkins, co-chairman of SPC’s Special Products Committee, which oversees the award program. “His affinity for Southern Pine is obvious, and as a nationally recognized expert he is helping tell the rest of the world what we in the Southern Pine industry already know – Southern Pine is beautiful, durable and sustainable.”

The award will be presented during the SPC portion of SFPA’s upcoming 2007 Annual Meeting in Charleston, S.C. It’s not too late to sign up for the meeting. To book your room, call the Francis Marion Hotel at 843/722-0600 or 877/756-2121.
