SPC Represented at FBMA Show

The Florida Building Material Association’s (FBMA) Main Event & Gulf Atlantic Building Products Expo in Kissimmee, Fla., last week provided SFPA Vice President of Marketing Steve Bean an opportunity to promote Southern Pine and learn what’s happening with the Florida building supply market. “Business is clearly down for most Florida retailers,” Steve reports. “One owner from Ocala told me that his business in 2007 was down 55% from 2006, and I heard similar stories from other companies.”

Interest in Southern Pine, however, remained high. Steve reports visitors to the Southern Pine Council exhibit were especially interested in SPC’s recently updated Pressure-Treated Southern Pine guide and the Southern Pine Lumber Library CD. “They were also interested in the usual subjects – span tables, treated lumber fasteners, raised floors and supply issues,” Steve said.

About 250 businesses and organizations exhibited at the show, promoting everything from fasteners to roofing to lumber and plywood. SFPA member companies Georgia-Pacific LLC and Weyerhaeuser Company also attended. For more information, contact Steve at 504/443-4464, ext. 234, or sbean@sfpa.org.

Free Exhibition Tickets Available

A limited number of free “VIP” guest tickets are available from SFPA for the Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference set for Oct. 18-20 in New Orleans. The event is billed as the only trade show for architects, contractors, builders, developers, building owners and specialty tradesmen who work in historic restoration, renovation and traditionally-inspired new design and construction. SFPA staff will represent the Southern Pine Council at the show.

The guest tickets entitle bearers to free admission to the exhibit hall; free admission to the keynote address; and discount pricing on seminars, tours and special events for those who register by Oct. 7.

Class Brings Insight into Products, Issues

SFPA Director of Industrial Markets Russell Richardson gained some “hands-on” knowledge of flooring products by attending the National Wood Flooring Association’s (NWFA) “Installation and Sand & Finish School” last week in Baltimore, Md. “This was an excellent opportunity for me to build my knowledge and meet individuals involved in the flooring industry,” Russell said. “It also helped me recognize marketing opportunities for Southern Pine as a flooring product.”

Talking with attendees at the class also helped Russell identify two main issues facing the flooring industry. Those issues are how moisture affects flooring and a need for environmentally-compliant or “green” products to meet demands from consumers and design/build professionals.  “These are two topics we at SFPA are monitoring and researching very closely in an effort to keep our members on top of these issues.”

The class, which covered the essential steps of installing, sanding and finishing a floor, was led by NWFA Director of Technical Training Steve Seabaugh and a team of instructors. For more information, contact Russell at 504/443-4464, ext. 239, or rrichardson@sfpa.org.
