Southern Pine Council Web Site Wins Praise

The Southern Pine Council’s Web site – www.southernpine.com – walked away with three top awards and one honorable mention in an awards competition launched by Hanley Wood Business Media this year. The Vanguard Awards honor the best manufacturer Web sites in the business-to-business market based on their usefulness to construction professionals. Fourteen entries earned either “Best” or “Honorable Mention” in eight categories. The SPC site won top awards in the following three categories:

  • Best Overall

  • Best Product

  • Best Section for Professionals

The site also earned an “Honorable Mention” in Best Navigation.

“The Internet is an essential tool for builders and remodelers in their search for product information,” said Jean Dimeo, editorial director of Hanley Wood’s Building Products magazine and ebuild, a comprehensive online guide to building products. “Building professionals want to find information on the latest building products quickly and easily – and the Vanguard Award winners have taken that demand to heart. These exceptional Web sites feature user-friendly site navigation that allows pros to easily find the information they need when making their purchasing decisions.”

Kim Drew, SPC’s public relations consultant, entered www.southernpine.com in the competition. She notes, “This is truly a feather in the cap of the entire SPC team. Hanley Wood’s magazines are among the best in the industry, and their widely-read titles span our industry’s key audience of builders, remodelers, designers and architects.”

Long-Sullivan Award Draws Interesting Entries

Four nominations have been received to date for the Southern Pine Council’s Long-Sullivan Award. The award recognizes a designer, builder, engineer or other professional who has creatively or uniquely demonstrated the use of Southern Pine in commercial or residential construction. Projects produced by the current nominees range from a private vacation home complex totaling more than 10,000 square feet to the use of treated Southern Pine fences to divide 1,000 acres of farmland.

“Just about every Southern Pine product possible was included in the vacation home,” said SFPA Director of Industrial Markets Russell Richardson, who is coordinating the program.

If you know someone whose work deserves recognition, please nominate him or her for the Southern Pine Council’s 2007 Long-Sullivan Award no later than Aug. 22.  The award will be presented Oct. 1 at SFPA’s Annual Meeting in Charleston, S.C. SFPA Staff Hits Educational Trail

SFPA’s marketing staff will tell Southern Pine’s story through a series of upcoming trade shows and seminars. At most of the events, staff will use Southern Pine Council exhibits and literature to promote the advantages of using raised floor construction to help reduce homeowners’ risk from flooding and, in turn, provide lower flood insurance premiums. Other benefits, including ease of renovations and repairs, will also be extolled. The raised floor message will be delivered at the following events over the next six weeks:

o        Florida Building Material Association's Main Event & Gulf Atlantic Building Products Expo in Kissimmee, Fla., Aug. 23-25

o        Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference and Show in Kenner, La., Sept. 13-14

o        Arkansas Floodplain Management Association Fall Conference in Eureka Springs, Ark., Sept. 23-26

o        Texas Association of Builders Sunbelt Builders Show in Grapevine, Texas, Sept. 27-29

Steve Bean, SFPA’s vice president of marketing, and Cathy Kaake, director of engineered and framing markets, will also make presentations at the Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference. Cathy will highlight the latest codes and standards available for designing wood-frame structures to resist high-wind and flood loads; and Steve will review code requirements for pressure-treated wood and examine best practices for fastener selection and connections. In addition, Cathy will talk about reducing flood losses through the International Codes at the Arkansas Floodplain Management Association’s conference.

Shifting focus to the environmental arena, an exhibit at the AIA Louisiana Design Conference 2007 in Lafayette, La., Sept. 13-15, will communicate that Southern Pine building products are among the most environmentally-friendly options on the market.
