Check-off Update on Tap for Annual Meeting

An update on efforts to establish a commodity check-off program for North American wood products is on the agenda for SFPA’s upcoming 2009 Annual Meeting. The report will come from Steve Lovett, a staff member for the Blue Ribbon Commission developing the program. Attendees will also hear updates on efforts to promote wood in nonresidential construction from Southeast Regional Director Pat Schleisman of WoodWorks; on the LSU AgCenter’s partnership with the Raised Floor Living program from Dr. Pat Skinner of the AgCenter; and on the National Frame Building Association’s post-frame marketing initiative from Dan Nyberg of Morton Buildings. Reports on progress with the Raised Floor Living and Real Outdoor Living campaigns will also be presented.

The meeting will be held Oct. 10-13 at The Roosevelt in New Orleans. A brochure with additional details was e-mailed this week. If you didn’t receive a copy, click here to download one. For more information, contact Dianne Breaux at 504/443-4464, ext. 225, or by e-mail at dbreaux@sfpa.org.

Good Time to Build Business through International Events

Numerous trade shows and events scheduled throughout the remainder of 2009 provide SFPA and Southern Pine Council members a venue to reinforce existing international markets or even establish new ones, notes Ned DeJarnette, SFPA’s director of international markets. “Because we’re still faced with difficult wood product markets these days, it’s a good idea to explore new markets overseas or reconnect with old ones,” Ned said. “SFPA and SPC members are eligible to receive reimbursement for certain travel expenses related to these upcoming trade trips, and that makes this an attractive way to pursue new business.”

A partial list includes Vietnamwood 2009, Sept. 24-27 in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam; Cityscape Dubai Show, Oct. 5-8 in Dubai; EXPO CIHAC, Oct. 14-17 in Mexico City; Interbuild 2009, Oct. 18-21 in Birmingham, UK; Bahamas Home & Builders Show, Oct. 30 - Nov. 1 in Nassau; Maderalia, Nov. 3-6 in Valencia, Spain; and Taiwan International Building Show, Dec. 10-13 in Taipei. SPC, APA Promote Raised Floors, Wood Products at Florida Show

The Southern Pine Council and APA continued efforts to promote Raised Floor Living with an exhibit at the Southeast Building Conference and Green Building Show held recently in Orlando, Fla. Russell Richardson, SFPA’s director of industrial markets, staffed a raised floor exhibit along with C.W. Macomber, APA’s regional field representative for Florida.  “Although attendance was down, we still had some good quality conversations with the attendees who stopped by the booth,” Russell said. “Several potential raised floor developments were identified after talking with some of the attendees. The show served its purpose by allowing us to connect to the builders in the Florida area, one of our target markets.”

Publications such as the Raised Floor Systems Design and Construction Guide, Pressure-Treated Southern Pine and Southern Pine Use Guide were also distributed to attendees who stopped by the exhibit.  In addition, Russell and C.W. fielded various inquiries related to solid sawn and engineered wood products.  For more information, contact Russell at 504/443-4464, ext. 239, or rrichardson@sfpa.org.
