Bring Discussion Ideas to Midyear Meeting

SFPA’s breaking out a new forum for member discussion at the Midyear Meeting next week, and Southern Pine Council Chairman Mike Warren and Vice Chairman Kerlin Drake encourage everyone to bring forward issues and ideas they believe are important to the industry. The discussions will be held 7:30-9 a.m. on Wednesday during breakfast roundtables for each of SPC’s four committees – building systems, special products, treated systems and international. Participants are invited to visit as many of the roundtables as they want. The discussions will be summarized and continued in the SPC session that follows from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The Midyear Meeting will be held June 9-10 at the Westin New Orleans Canal Place in New Orleans. For more information about the roundtables, contact Cathy Kaake, SFPA’s senior director of engineered and framing markets, at 504/443-4464, ext. 213, or ckaake@sfpa.org.

Raised Floors, Porches, Decks Gain Market Share in 2008

The U.S. Census Bureau released its report on 2008 “Characteristics of New Housing” Monday. The report contains information on everything from walls to floors, including data that indicates progress in the Southern Pine Council’s Raised Floor Living campaign. The report shows the percentage of new one-family homes built with crawlspaces (raised floor foundations) in the South rose 2% in 2008, while the market share of homes built on slabs dropped 3%. Nationally, the market share for raised floors jumped 4% in 2007 and held that level in 2008, while the market share for slabs dropped by 3% in 2008 compared to 2007. The report on outdoor features brought more good news for the Southern Pine forest products industry. In the South, the percentage of one-family homes featuring a porch rose 5%, decks rose by 2% and patios dropped 2%. The presence of porches and decks generally indicates a raised floor home, while patios normally accompany a home built on a slab. Throughout the United States, the percentage of one-family homes with porches and decks rose 2% and patios dropped 3%. Click here for the full report.

Raised Floor Habitat Home Dedicated

A raised floor Habitat for Humanity home built through a partnership with the wood industry was dedicated Saturday in Vero Beach, Fla. The Southern Pine Council and APA worked with Indian River Habitat for Humanity in Vero Beach on the project, which involved building two identical 1,387-square-foot homes side by side, one on a slab and one on a raised floor foundation. The goal was to study costs and educate Habitat affiliates about raised floors. The raised floor home incorporates the latest techniques and engineered wood products with a floor system using Southern Pine floor trusses supported on a continuous concrete block stem wall foundation. Vero Beach is in a 140-mph wind zone, so both homes also represent a test for wood-frame construction in a market heavily devoted to block construction.

The project provided ample opportunity to communicate the benefits of raised floor construction throughout the Treasure Coast area. SFPA staff produced a five-part series for broadcast on a local television station supported by a Web page explaining the scope of the project and raised floor advantages. Several articles appeared in local newspapers about the two homes, and efforts to reach the trade media are under way. SPC also developed a one-page flier to explain the benefits of raised floors to Habitat affiliates. APA coordinated construction progress, analyzing costs and providing construction guidance to Habitat crews as the homes were built. Though initial costs came in somewhat higher, the campaign stresses the long-term benefits to the new homeowners: improved energy efficiency and security, more comfortable living areas inside and out plus lower maintenance and repair costs.

New Speaker for EXPO Conference Program

Expo University, the conference portion of SFPA’s upcoming EXPO, announces that Jim Langdale, vice president of the Langdale Company and general manager of Langdale Forest Products, will speak during the “Cutting Tools 1” program on Thursday, June 11. Jim – who will speak on "Filing Departments and Service Centers: A Double Edged Sword or Two Pronged Weapon?" – is the second speaker during the 9 a.m. to noon program

Langdale Forest Products is a 150 MMbf sawmill in Georgia employing the latest advances in sawing with a complete filing department in-house. Langdale Company also owns a service center (Industrial Cutting Tools), which gives Jim a unique perspective from both sides of the cutting tools road.

The “Cutting Tools 1” program will be moderated by Michael Raybon, general manager of Industrial Cutting Tools. Speakers before and after Jim include Paul Smith of Smith Sawmill Service on the history and evolvement of the current sawmill filing environment; and Walter Cowart, assistant manager of Industrial Cutting Tools, on cost determining factors used by service centers. The “Cutting Tools 2” program on Friday, June 12, features speakers Russell Robertson, president of Omega Solutions; David Reed, president of Cutting Edge Tooling; and Michael Raybon.

In addition to “Cutting Tools,” the Expo University conference includes programs each morning on “Sawmill Efficiencies” and “Wood Bioenergy.” Cost of the conference at the Morial Convention Center is $179. Visit www.sfpaexpo.com to view the program and register.
