Magazine Showcases Southern Pine Flooring

Manufacturers of Southern Pine flooring be forewarned – demand for your product may go up after some 70,000 readers get a look at the Southern Pine flooring shown on the cover of the new issue of Woodcraft Magazine. After talking to SFPA, the magazine opted to use Southern Pine flooring in its new workshop. The June issue shows off the workshop and provides readers guidance on how to build one of their own. SFPA and Southern Pine flooring are mentioned in the cover story starting on Page 24, plus the flooring gets a strong endorsement in a story titled “How to Install a Workshop Wood Floor” on Page 56.

Contributing editor Tim Snyder writes, “We chose southern yellow pine for the Woodcraft Magazine workshop floor for a number of reasons. First, it’s affordable and widely available. The 1 x 6 tongue-and-groove boards cost just under $3 per square foot in our neighborhood. Even though southern yellow pine is a softwood, this flooring offers an excellent combination of durability, strength, and resiliency – which probably explains why it’s been used for centuries as flooring in residential and commercial buildings.”

Can’t get much higher praise than that. The publication’s staff uses the workshop to build and photograph many of the projects featured in the magazine, so the flooring will be seen in the magazine for years to come. Richard Wallace, SFPA’s vice president of communications, worked with Woodcraft Magazine on the project. The flooring was donated by Grizzly Forest Products of South Carolina.

SFPA President Visits Member Companies

SFPA President Digges Morgan recently visited with representatives of Active and Affiliate member companies in several states to update them on the association’s activities and services. “We like to stay in touch and visit our members in their office and mill locations to bring them up-to-date on SFPA’s activities and programs,” Digges said. Visits were made to Lampe & Malphrus Lumber Company and Toney Lumber Company, both in North Carolina; Wood Preservers Inc. in Virginia; and Deltic Timber Corporation, Potlatch, Ray White Lumber Company and Weyerhaeuser, all in Arkansas. Richard Wallace, SFPA’s vice president of communications, joined Digges for the Arkansas visits. Additional member visits are planned later in the year. Meanwhile, members who would like detailed information on the association’s activities should contact Digges at 504/443-4464, ext. 215, or dmorgan@sfpa.org.

Things to See and Do in New Orleans

Most of you coming to New Orleans for SFPA’s Midyear Meeting June 9-10 are well-acquainted with the city and its charms, but here’s a quick reminder about some things to see and do while in town. Of course, there’s the French Quarter with its multitude of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. And there’s Jackson Square and Café Du Monde with its famous coffee and beignets. However, you can also find plenty to see and do practically next door to the Westin New Orleans Canal Place, the site of this year’s meeting. Those attractions include the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and Insectarium, Harrah’s and the Riverwalk Marketplace, which offers shops, food and a prime view of the Mississippi River.

Last but not least, don’t forget to schedule time to take in one of the premier trade shows in the forest products industry – SFPA’s EXPO 2009. Right down the street from the Westin, EXPO offers the latest available in machinery and technology. Plus, for every four people your group registers, a fifth person can attend for free. To take advantage of the offer, contact EXPO Director Eric Gee at 504/443-4464, ext. 214, or egee@sfpa.org. See you in N’Awlins!
