Top 10 State DestinationsCanadian Softwood Imports to U.S. Down

Canadian softwood lumber imports to the United States decreased 3% in 2006 when compared to 2005, reports SFPA Economic Services Director Wade Camp. Texas, Georgia and Illinois were the top four U.S. destinations for Canadian imports during the past year (see chart). The top three importers after Canada are Germany, Chile, Sweden and Brazil. Canada continues to lead as the top source for softwood lumber imported into the United States. A complete report on 2006 softwood lumber imports into the United States is available in the members-only section of SFPA’s Web site at www.sfpa.org. The report breaks down imports by province and state of destination by volume and value. For more information, contact Wade at extension 217 or wcamp@sfpa.org

Former QB Takes to the Air Again to Promote Raised Floors

SFPA affiliate member and former NFL All-Pro and LSU quarterback Bert Jones will once again promote the merits of raised floor living in a new series of TV commercials hitting the airwaves Wednesday.  Bert Jones stars in Raised Floor Living commercials. The commercials target audiences in several areas along the hurricane-prone Mississippi Gulf Coast, many of whom are still struggling to rebuild after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “Raised wood-frame construction costs less – looks better,” Bert says in one spot. “You don’t have to worry so much about flooding and termites. Insurance is more affordable.” The Ehrhardt Group, the agency that developed the Southern Pine Council’s Raised Floor Living campaign, designed three 30-second TV spots to increase awareness of the advantages of raised wood-frame construction and guide viewers to www.RaisedFloorLiving.com where they can learn more about raised floor construction. They can also use the site’s locator to find a building professional. The spots will run during May and June in the metro-New Orleans area and along the I-10 corridor between Lake Charles, La., and Pensacola, Fla. They will air on NBC affiliate WDSU-TV covering metro New Orleans; ABC affiliate WLOX-TV covering Biloxi and Gulfport; CBS affiliate WKRG-TV covering Mobile and Pensacola; and NBC affiliate KPLC-TV covering the Lake Charles area.  The spots will run again in September and October.

AIA Show Gives Professionals Access to Newest SP Info

More than 24,000 architects, engineers, builders and building officials viewed the latest innovations in construction materials and techniques at the AIA National Convention and Design Expo last week in San Antonio. The Southern Pine Council and APA-The Engineered Wood Association shared a booth at the Expo, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about engineered wood products and Southern Pine solid wood products in one stop and keeping the two associations’ costs to a minimum. SFPA's Steve Bean, vice president of marketing, and Russell Richardson, industrial markets director, joined APA's Bruce Cordova in promoting wood products to more than 1,000 visitors to the booth. Many welcomed the chance to pick up new materials to replace the older, out-of-date brochures they were using.  The Southern Pine Use Guide, Maximum Spans, Headers and Beams and Lumber Library CD were all popular choices. Most of the visitors were architects or worked in architectural offices as designers or specifiers, but a number of other professionals – including building officials, builders and home designers – also collected information or asked questions about wood. "We clearly saw the impact of the green movement at this show," Steve remarked.  “Just about everyone promoted some type of a green message in their literature or booth design.”  SPC’s message included an environmental display that illustrates the environmental benefits of using wood.  “Several visitors stopped to read the information very carefully,” Steve reports.

Headquarters Makeover in Progress

A complete and much-needed exterior overhaul of the SFPA headquarters building is well under way. Since its dedication in 1978, the 10,700 square-foot structure has withstood hurricanes and scorching sun. All Workers from Core Construction install new windows at SFPA's headquarters building.exterior siding (rough-sawn board and batten), generously provided by International Paper, is being replaced. New windows were installed in the twin atriums, addressing moisture problems that caused the original windows to fail and the decay of some supporting floor joists. Workers have uncovered termite damage and needed roof repairs that are being addressed with extensive use of pressure-treated material. This week, painters began applying two coats of a latex solid color stain, donated by Thomspon’s WaterSeal. Repairs to walkways, steps, plus reinvigorating the entrance landscaping will complete the renovation. “Last year, the SFPA board directed us to take care of some long-overdue repairs and maintenance issues here at headquarters,” said SFPA President Digges Morgan. “Members and staff will be pleased with the results that will ensure the lasting value of the building.”
