Canadian softwood lumber imports to the United States decreased 3% in 2006 when compared to 2005, reports SFPA Economic Services Director Wade Camp. Texas, Georgia and Illinois were the top four U.S. destinations for Canadian imports during the past year (see chart). The top three importers after Canada are Germany, Chile, Sweden and Brazil. Canada continues to lead as the top source for softwood lumber imported into the United States. A complete report on 2006 softwood lumber imports into the United States is available in the members-only section of SFPA’s Web site at www.sfpa.org. The report breaks down imports by province and state of destination by volume and value. For more information, contact Wade at extension 217 or wcamp@sfpa.org. |

AIA Show Gives Professionals Access to Newest SP Info More than 24,000 architects, engineers, builders and building officials viewed the latest innovations in construction materials and techniques at the AIA National Convention and Design Expo last week in San Antonio. The Southern Pine Council and APA-The Engineered Wood Association shared a booth at the Expo, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about engineered wood products and Southern Pine solid wood products in one stop and keeping the two associations’ costs to a minimum. SFPA's Steve Bean, vice president of marketing, and Russell Richardson, industrial markets director, joined APA's Bruce Cordova in promoting wood products to more than 1,000 visitors to the booth. Many welcomed the chance to pick up new materials to replace the older, out-of-date brochures they were using. The Southern Pine Use Guide, Maximum Spans, Headers and Beams and Lumber Library CD were all popular choices. Most of the visitors were architects or worked in architectural offices as designers or specifiers, but a number of other professionals – including building officials, builders and home designers – also collected information or asked questions about wood. "We clearly saw the impact of the green movement at this show," Steve remarked. “Just about everyone promoted some type of a green message in their literature or booth design.” SPC’s message included an environmental display that illustrates the environmental benefits of using wood. “Several visitors stopped to read the information very carefully,” Steve reports. |
