‘Green’ Could be Color of Success in Future

“The Business of Green” will be the main focus of SFPA’s Midyear Meeting, set for May 14-15 in New Orleans. Members of SFPA and non-SFPA members active in the Southern Pine Council – a joint effort of SFPA and the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association – are encouraged to attend.

The meeting, which will be held at the Westin New Orleans Canal Place, begins with a tour of two New Orleans raised floor construction projects to which SPC members are donating materials. The tour ends with lunch at SFPA’s headquarters. The SPC portion of the meeting kicks off at 1 p.m. and continues on the following day. Click here for a full agenda.

We’ll provide more details about speakers in a future issue of the newsletter. Meanwhile, room availability and a special meeting rate are only guaranteed through April 11, so those who want to attend should reserve their rooms as soon as possible by calling the Westin at 866/527-1381. Be sure to tell the reservation clerk that you will be attending the SFPA Midyear Meeting. Click here to download a form to register for the meeting. The dates and green theme of SFPA’s Midyear Meeting coincide perfectly with the National Association of Home Builders’ 10th Annual National Green Building Conference set for May 11-13 in New Orleans, La. The Southern Pine Council will exhibit at the conference, which will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. SPC participants are invited to come by and visit. Click here and choose the “registration” link to obtain a free one-day exhibits-only pass valued at $75. Registration for the free passes ends April 18.

Wood Works for Commercial Buildings

A series of Wood Solutions Fairs designed to encourage the use of wood in commercial buildings kicked off last week in Charlotte, N.C. Cathy Kaake, SFPA’s director of engineered and framing markets, and Russell Richardson, director of industrial markets, represented the Southern Pine Council at the event, which drew about 400 attendees.

SPC’s exhibit at the fair promoted raised floors, decks, finger-jointed studs and messages about wood’s suitability for green building. In addition, Cathy presented a seminar titled “Reducing Flood Losses through the International Codes” that shows how raised floor construction can help lessen the effects of flooding.

“The audience consisted mostly of engineers and architects seeking information on wood products,” Russell said. He noted that the most popular items at SPC’s booth were publications with information about maximum spans and headers and beams.

The Wood Solutions Fairs are designed to educate architects, engineers, builders and others on using wood in commercial buildings. They are sponsored by WoodWorks, an initiative created by the Wood Products Council to promote the use of wood in non-residential construction. Additional fairs are scheduled in San Francisco, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., and Minneapolis, Minn. For more information, visit www.woodworks.org.

For more information about SPC’s participation at the fairs, contact Cathy at 504/443-4464, ext. 213, or ckaake@sfpa.org, or Russell at ext. 239 or rrichardson@sfpa.org
