New Ad Targets HBA Members

A new round of advertising promoting the advantages of raised floor construction is reaching the memberships of four homebuilder associations in key target markets. "Discover Raised Floor Foundations" is the headline of half-page ads set to appear in newsletter issues throughout the remainder of 2007. The ad combines a single underfloor visual of a completed raised floor with a listing of the system’s many benefits. The tagline encourages readers to "Build to a Higher Standard" and directs them to www.RaisedFloorLiving.com for more information.

In the metro Orlando area, just over 2,300 builders and contractors receive the association’s HBA News, a tabloid-sized newspaper. The new ad will appear in three editions. In Houston, some 4,000 people in the residential building trades will see the ad in three issues of Houston Builder magazine. Two homebuilder associations cover the New Orleans market with monthly newsletters. The St. Tammany HBA represents the state’s most-active homebuilding parish, where some 800 members will see SPC’s new ad six times this year. Membership in the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans is at an all-time high with nearly 1,100 members. The new ad debuted in their newsletter last month and will run again in May.

Southern Pine Stands Out at JLC Live

More than 8,000 New England builders and remodelers mobbed the aisles at Journal of Light Construction magazine’s JLC Live Residential Construction Show held March 23 and 24 in Providence, Rhode Island. Southern Pine Council ) a newcomer to the show ) was the only exhibitor on the floor promoting structural wood products. "Thanks for bringing wood to this show," noted one builder.

Treated decking and porch flooring are very popular building products in the coastal New England market. Demand was great for SPC’s literature and CDs with a total of 350 CDs distributed. Attendees welcomed the opportunity to pick up the generic specification aids offered by SPC. Builders were also glad to receive SPC’s revised Pressure-Treated Southern Pine guide. "In a trade concerned about an aging workforce and a shortage of skilled pros, it was encouraging to see many younger builders and trade school students in attendance," said Richard Kleiner, SFPA director of treated markets.

JLC Live was named one of the 50 fastest growing trade shows in North America in 2004 and 2005. One thing that makes it so unique is the interactive, hands-on classroom-style product training on the show floor.

Staying Current in Florida

A continuing education provider seminar attended by SFPA Director of Industrial Markets Russell Richardson earlier this month will allow SFPA to continue presenting seminars in Florida. "Our seminars are highly effective channels for educating and promoting Southern Pine products, and this seminar provided the basic tools for us to stay accredited in Florida," Russell explained. The seminar is required by Florida’s Construction Industry Licensing Board and Bureau of Education & Testing. "Overall the seminar will contribute to our efforts to promote Southern Pine products by helping us navigate Florida’s rules and regulations," Russell said.

Landowner Update

Members of Louisiana’s Livingston Parish Forest Landowners Association have a better feel for the Southern Pine market thanks to a recent presentation by SFPA Vice President of Marketing Steve Bean. Steve updated landowners on the general economy and explained the structure of the lumber market and where Southern Pine lumber is most in demand. His analysis included segmentation data on grades, sizes and geographic distribution for treated and untreated products. He also discussed the importance of repair and remodeling markets, especially for treated products. "The audience was very interested in this topic," he said. "They all listened intently, and several asked numerous questions both during and after the presentation."
