Expo Offers Latest Products Plus Training
SFPA’s biennial Forest Products Machinery
& Equipment Exposition offers
industry members a chance to catch up on the latest in equipment and
technology, but there’s another compelling reason to add
The 2009 program keys in on three areas: sawmill efficiencies, cutting tools and wood bioenergy. One of the speakers in the sawmill efficiencies track is Huey Long, a veteran of both the military and forest products industry. His presentation will examine the basic areas of leadership necessary for organizations to succeed as the forest products industry recovers. Participants will learn what assessments to make, how to quantify the results and what steps to take to improve their teams. Huey is the subject of a “Q&A” feature in the March/April issue of Southern Lumberman magazine (registered subscribers can read the story here).
Expo 2009 happens June 11-13 at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Visit www.sfpaexpo.com for more information and to register. Click here for details about the conference program. For information on exhibiting at Expo, contact Expo Director Eric Gee at 504/443-4464, ext. 214, or by e-mail at egee@sfpa.org. |

News from the Forest Products Community Two forest products groups recently announced news about staff changes. The American Forest & Paper Association named Bob Glowinski as its group vice president for forestry and wood products, and the Forest Products Society announced the selection of Stefan Bergman as its executive vice president.
Bob is a 31-year veteran of the forest products industry and for the past 16 years led AF&PA’s American Wood Council, which advances the use of wood in construction. He has also served as AF&PA’s manager of fire technology, technical research counsel and assistant vice president of the building codes and engineering division.
Stefan has seven years experience in non-profit association work related to forestry and forest products issues at the national level and in the Northeast and Midwest regions. Most recently, he served as executive director of the Great Lakes Forest Alliance, an organization that facilitates cooperative efforts to enhance management and sustainable use of forest lands in the “lake states” – Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin – and the Canadian province of Ontario. Stefan will begin managing the Society on April 20. |

JLC Live Draws Crowd The JLC Live Residential Construction Show held last week in Rhode Island attracted quite a crowd, bucking a recent downward trend in trade show attendance brought on by the nation’s economic doldrums. Part of the appeal may be the show’s “hands-on” approach with demonstrations and workshops happening directly on the trade show floor. Richard Kleiner, SFPA’s director of treated markets, represented the Southern Pine Council at the event with an outdoor decking exhibit. He distributed about 200 copies of SPC’s Lumber Library CD and 150 copies of SPC’s technical publications.
Created in 1995, JLC Live attracts residential builders, remodelers, general contractors and other construction professionals from the Northeastern region of the United States. |
