Engineers Get Code Message A new seminar for engineers highlights the 2006 code requirements addressing high-wind and flood-resistant construction. SFPA’s Cathy Kaake, director of engineered & framing markets, was the guest speaker for the 87th monthly educational session organized by Digital Engineering and Imaging in Kenner, Louisiana, on behalf of local civil engineers. Cathy presented a new program, "Wind and Flood Resistance of Wood-Frame Construction". She began by summarizing 2006 code requirements for high winds, and available prescriptive wind standards – SSTD 10 Hurricane Resistant Construction, Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM) and the new WFCM Guides). Next, Cathy summarized the flood-resistant construction requirements in the 2006 International Residential Code (IRC). She explained how raised floor construction can help meet those flood requirements without adversely impacting neighboring properties. Cathy concluded by saying that the grade and size of framing members and sheathing are only marginally different when designed for wind and flood resistance; the biggest difference is the use of engineered fasteners to maintain a continuous load path for each building from its roof down through to the foundation.Cathy provided several handouts, including SPC’s Lumber Library CD and AF&PA's WFCM Guide for 130 mph winds. The seminar organizer commented that her presentation was one of the most interesting seminars they have had as part of their continuing education series. The 15 attendees were provided with one Professional Development Hour (PDH). Louisiana professional engineers are required to have 30 PDHs every two years as a condition of their license renewal.

SP Popular at SURFACES Nearly 40,000 floor covering professionals attended the Surfaces 2007 show in Las Vegas, and the Southern Pine Council was there to assist with product information all about Southern Pine interior products. During the three-day event, SPC's exhibit in the grand lobby of the Sands Exposition hall featured samples of Southern Pine flooring and specialty patterns. Attendees included dealers, distributors, designers and installers.
"The display rack of samples really drove traffic to our exhibit," said Richard Kleiner, SFPA director of treated markets. "Visitors would stop and inspect samples, then ask about sources of supply. They were all curious about the unique characteristics of Southern Pine." Copies of both product guides – to Southern Pine flooring and patterns – were distributed, along with a listing of mill suppliers from SPC’s online product locator. "Wood continues to maintain a strong presence at Surfaces, with many international players in the market. This year, China had its own pavilion featuring many wood flooring dealers," Kleiner noted.
