SFPA Salutes Georgia-Pacific Back in 1927, Owen Cheatham founded Georgia Hardwood Company in Augusta, Georgia. This year, the company we now know as Georgia-Pacific Corporation will be 80 years old. Headquartered in Atlanta since 1982, Georgia-Pacific employs some 55,000 people at more than 300 locations worldwide.
Over the years, G-P has been well-known as an environmental steward. In 1993, Chairman Pete Correll was appointed to the President's Council on Sustainable Development, to identify ways for the country to grow economically while sustaining the environment for future generations. In 2005, Georgia-Pacific was acquired by Koch Industries and became a privately held, wholly owned subsidiary, continuing to operate from its Atlanta headquarters.
Over the 50 years as a member of SFPA, many G-P employees have provided their expertise to the advancement of the Southern Pine industry. Alex Hopkins was SFPA’s Chairman in 2000. SFPA President Digges Morgan recently delivered a distinctive glass award commemorating G-P’s support over five decades.
