Temple-Inland
Temple-Inland
Inc. has been an Active member of SFPA since 1940. The company started
in 1893
as a single sawmill in Diboll, Texas. Today, Temple-Inland is
headquartered in Austin, Texas, and employs 12,000 people. The company operates 17 building
products manufacturing facilities, six containerboard mills and 64 converting
facilities. Temple-Inland's building
products facilities are located near large, high-growth markets and produce
lumber, particleboard, medium density
fiberboard (MDF), gypsum wallboard and fiberboard products. On the corrugated packaging side, Temple-Inland is the No.
3 producer in North America.
The building
products part of the business started in 1893 when T.L.L. Temple founded Southern Pine
Lumber Company and started operations in Diboll with the purchase of
7,000 acres of timberland. The sawmill in Diboll began operating the following
year, cutting 50,000 board feet of lumber per day. By the 1950s, advances in
technology allowed the conversion of chips, sawdust and shavings into profitable
panel products. The company took advantage of this and began manufacturing
fiberboard sheathing. By 1964, the company’s land holdings had grown to more
than 450,000 acres. In 1973, Time Inc. acquired Temple Industries and merged it
with Eastex Pulp and Paper Company to form Temple-Eastex Inc. In 1983, Time
joined Temple-Eastex with Inland Container Corporation and spun them off as
Temple-Inland.
In 2007, Temple-Inland decided
to focus on its two core businesses -- building products and corrugated
packaging -- and sold its timberlands. For more
